2019 UFO Challenge

Judy L at Patchwork Times is hosting the 2019 UFO Challenge.  I did remarkably well in 2018 (finished 8 and moved forward on 2 others) so I am going to continue my UFO Busting in 2019.

I Like Thursdays #32

Here are some likes from this past week.
The view from my front deck.
I love watching the clouds.

I Love Kelly Clarkson
I was watching The Voice and had to pause and this was my picture.
I can't even remember what she was talking about.
She is so expressive with her words and her gestures.

It was turkey broth week.
Even though I didn't cook Thanksgiving dinner,
we still cook a turkey over the weekend.
I mean, turkey sandwiches are the best!
And then it's all the other turkey goodness that you get after you are tired of sandwiches.

Turkey bones cooked all day and overnight on the woodstove.
Cooled and placed in fridge overnight.
Finally strained and put into 9 pint jars.
I must have a full canner so beans pressure cook as long as broth.
4 pints plus 3 1/2 pints of pinto on my pantry shelf.
Can you believe I'm out of pint jars!!!
That's both good and bad.
I need more beans canned.

Have a wonderful week.

Design Wall Monday and Mystery Monday Link Up...

...All Rolled Into One.

It's that time of year again.
Oh how I love a Quiltville Mystery.
For me it's all about trust.
I trust that Bonnie has designed another fabulous quilt in Good Fortune
andI am not hesitant at all to jump in with both feet.
No hesitation on my part at all.
I love the colors she chose for this year.
I love that there will be lots of orange.
I love that I have lots of fabric in my stash for this quilt.
I love that I could add some new fabrics to my stash and into this quilt.

I'm excited to be almost finished with Clue 1.
Just a bit more spinning and pressing.
Then I will spend the rest of the week working on another project while
I patiently wait for Friday.

I have been a Bonnie fan since right after she started Quiltville.
One day she shared her Scrap Users System and I had to follow.
So when clue 1 said to use strips of red and neutral,
I went right to my bins and pulled out my red and neutral strips.

My strip bins are full from years and years of strip swaps.
For years at our retreats we swapped neutral 2 1/2" strips along with some colors.
Then we added different sizes into the mix.
Thanks to my friends, I have a wonderful collection of strips in all usable sizes.

Pretty soon there was a small mountain of strips sewed together.
Oh the fun I was having!!

Then I couldn't stand it any more,
I had to cut some strips into units and make 4 patches.
Then I had to count to 10, spin those seams, press and pin.
Pretty soon, I'm left with just a few piles of 10 that need to be spun, pressed and pinned.

I will be working on this baby quilt later today.
It's always good to have a fun project to work on while I wait.

Fill you cup and enjoy your morning in Blogland.
I just betcha there will be lots and lots of 4 patches.

Get It Done--Week of November 26, 2019

After the full and busy last week, this will be a quiet week for us. Nothing is planned other that a few more hunting days. I'm trying to fight off a cold/flu thing so I'm not making many plans.

I decided to make my Fun On The Farm block for November before starting the mystery. I'm glad I did.

My plans for the week of November 29th:

Sewing Room
  • Put the heart quilt together.
  • Work on Quiltville mystery when next clue is available.

Kitchen Plans
  • Make up some turkey bone soup. I don't think there will be enough to can.
Evening Plans

  • Continue stitching diamonds for Antique Star quilt.

How did I do?
My plans for the week of November 19th:

Sewing Room
  • Be ready for the Quiltville Good Fortune mystery that starts Friday   Clue 1 Done!
  • Gather rulers, change rotary cutter blade, find and label project box. Done
  • Have a string sewing weekend day with Miss Clella-probably Saturday.  Did not happen......colds and flu happened instead.
  • Can I possibly finish quilting and binding Votes For Women Sampler???  Yes I can.

Kitchen Plans
  • Wednesday-make pumpkin bars into mini cupcakes for Thursday.  Done and gone. The mini muffins were a big hit!
  • Wednesday-make pumpkin pies --make 1 for breakfast Thursday (long time family tradition) and another to take to dinner.. Done and gone.
  • Load the dehydrator with onions, carrots, celery  Chopped and ready to dehydrate.
  • Can up bean soup and any ham broth that's left over from soup making.  8 pints ham and bean soup, 8 pints of ham broth on pantry shelves. 3 cartons of soup in the freezer.

Evening Plan
  • Continue stitching on Antique Start quilt.  I'm like Dory, just keep stitching, just keep stitching.
  • Hoping to be stitching down binding on Votes for Women quilt. Done.

I feel like I had a very productive week.

I Like Thursdays #31-Thanksgiving Edition

Happy Thanksgiving.
Today is all about spending time with those we love so my post is short and sweet.

For years and years and years, I have had pumpkin pie for breakfast.
I don't even know when I started doing this.
At first it was a funny family joke
but I found out recently that I am not the only one that does this.
Mom may have had a very good idea.

What if after dinner you are just too full to have pie.
If you have it for breakfast,
you are happy all day long.

That's my story.

I've almost finished my quilt.
Tuesday was our last sunny day for quite a while
so I took it out to the deck unfinished to get a good picture.
Tony Dog had to inspect.
I think he approved.

The binding is finished
but I still need to go back and quilt those 3 rows of sashing  I missed.
No big deal.
It will happen.

I hope your day is blessed and filled with the love of family and friends.

Design Wall Monday

While I'm waiting for the Quiltville mystery to start,
I'm quilting July's UFO from Judy L's Challenge.
 Finally!
My #11 is Grandmother's Choice-Votes For Women Sampler.
I don't know why I was so scared to quilt this.

I was super excited to get a ruler foot that finally I can use on my machine.
It's a Juki foot but it fits several high shank machines.
Well I did ok for a while but there is a learning curve and I want to get this done.

So I switched back over to my darning foot and got busy.
I sewed and sewed and sewed!

Sunday evening I was done!
Or I thought.
See the sashing rows above Miss Polly?
I was showing it off and looked down and dang!
I skipped quilting the sashing on 3 rows!
I'll go back in the in the morning and quilt those.
Binding is sewn on so I'll have this finished this week.
Yeah

Get It Done--Week of November 19, 2019

It's Thanksgiving week! Already!! This really snuck up on me. I'm really glad I'm not doing the majority of the cooking. My son in law is head cook this year. Hooray!
It was a fun week of working my plan. How I did last week is below.

My plans for the week of November 19th:

Sewing Room
  • Be ready for the Quiltville Good Fortune mystery that starts Friday
  • Gather rulers, change rotary cutter blade, find and label project box.
  • Have a string sewing weekend day with Miss Clella-probably Saturday.
  • Can I possibly finish quilting and binding Votes For Women Sampler???

Kitchen Plans
  • Wednesday-make pumpkin bars into mini cupcakes for Thursday.
  • Wednesday-make pumpkin pies --make 1 for breakfast Thursday (long time family tradition) and another to take to dinner..
  • Load the dehydrator with onions, carrots, celery
  • Can up bean soup and any ham broth that's left over from soup making.
Evening Plan

  • Continue stitching on Antique Start quilt.
  • Hoping to be stitching down binding on Votes for Women quilt.

How did I do with my plans for the week of November 12th?  Pretty good I think.

Sewing Room Plans
  • Sew baby quilt top together. Did not touch!
  • 2 doll shirts to send to Sue Done
  • Put retreat things away. Most of them are put away.
  • Start quilting the next quilt. Started quilting Votes for Women on Tuesday. As of Sunday evening, I have 2 more sides of the last border to finish. I might be done tonight.
  • Pull more fabrics for Quiltville mystery. I found several more awesome fabrics.
  • Stitch down binding on 30's Sampler.  Finished Tuesday evening.
Kitchen Plans
  • Monday-Make Pepperoni Rolls for Ernie to take to elk camp Tuesday morning.   Hubs came home and decided he'd rather just have pizza. OK, pizza for dinner Monday.
  • Can pinto, great northern, black and red beans. Nope...didn't even think about it.
  • Make ham broth and can it.  Broth cooked all day and overnight on the woodstove, needs to get cold so I can skim off the fat. Decided to can some bean soup so if there is any broth left, it will be canned at the same time.
Evening Plan
  • Work on Antique Star quilt.  I've been basting, basting, basting!  Need to cut more diamonds.

I Like Thursdays #30

30 posts from me,
114 posts from LeeAnna at Not Afraid of Color.
Check her out and the friends that also share their Thursday Likes.
Also, please join us in sharing a few of your Likes each week.

Retreat was last weekend.
I always take a picture of this snag tree on the first day of retreat.
I've been coming to this retreat center for 20 years and
probably started the pictures 15 years ago.
One day it will no longer be there but it sure is standing mighty right now.

There are lots of old Maple trees there.
I love all the colors so much.
I always feel my Gramma Maple when I look at them.

I love this picture so much that I use it as my phone background.

Sweet Nadine, retired kindergarten teacher, read us a story.
Wonky Donkey is now our new favorite.
If you haven't heard of Wonky Donkey,
search YouTube for it.
It's worth the watch.

There were lots of horses up on the hill from the sewing room.

These are my chickens.

These are our friend's chickens.
They go to Arizona for the winter so we are fostering their girls.
We call them Bill's Beach Babes.
We are lucky to have 2 chicken yards and 2 chicken houses.
The Babes are working hard in my garden which is their yard.

We get plenty of eggs every day!
I love that there are green eggs in my bucket.
I will be adding hens that lay pretty eggs to my flock in the spring.

I started quilting another quilt!
This Sampler is one of my favorites.
It's called Grandmother's Choice: Votes for Women.
I started this in October 2012 and it's aged long enough.
It is also the last of the quilts that were on the basted pile.

I added 400 new basting pins so I can baste a few more quilts now.
I got the idea from my friend Julie.
The basting is what holds me back from the quilting.
Now I can get in basting mode and baste as many as I have pins for
and I will be ready to quilt when I want to.
I have the most awesome friends!
Sharing such awesome ideas!!!
I am lucky to be in this great community of quilters.

I use size 1 pins with these grip covers.
I borrowed this picture from Amazon.
I also bought my covers from Amazon.
I worked on putting the covers on the pins during tv time in the evening.
It took 3 nights and a pair of little needle nose pliers to get them done.

Little Jessie is King of the Big Bed.
Hahaha.
He's so tiny but he thinks he takes up all the space.
He came to visit us at retreat and the gals were shocked at how tiny he is.
He's only 7 pounds but he's mighty.

I hope everyone has a wonderful week.

Design Wall Monday

I had my list of projects to work on at retreat.
First on the list was to put the binding on this quilt.
I'll hand stitch it down this week while watching tv at night.

Next up was to finish up the doll clothes.
I had the pants finished and made this shirt.
I'll make the remaining shirts at home and mail them to my friend this week.
My machine doesn't like to sew skinny knit seams.

But she does great paper piecing which was my next project
and what I worked on the rest of the weekend.
I ended the weekend with 20 completed Virginia Bound quarters and
18 more with the centers sewn.
Mindless string sewing is a great retreat project.

When I got home from retreat,
my energy level was low but my mind wouldn't shut off.
I decided to create a temporary design wall to work on this baby quilt.
It wasn't as easy as it was in my mind but I got it done.
Now I'll make progress on the baby quilt.

 Monday morning edit:
Blocks fell off into a pile on the floor.
I'll continue to use my bed as a design wall until I purchase some foam insulation.
BooHoo.

As I do with each retreat,
I stopped to take a picture of the tree snag.
The fall colors were stunning.
The weather was clear and cold and beautiful!

My project list is long but my energy level is high!
We had a great time with friends old and new.
I especially love when I can retreat with one of my daughters.

I Like Thursdays #29

Welcome to I Like Thursday,
the day we celebrate the simple pleasures in our lives.

Neutral fabrics.

Audiobooks downloaded from the library and quilting.
Even though this was not a favorite book, I listened for quite a while.
Then I returned it and chose a new one.
Technology is amazing!

I'm not that great of a quilter but
I enjoy the process and love learning new things.
I'm not giving up on rulers or ruler feet just yet.
I tried again.
I even wrote to Brother Sewing to ask someone to design a ruler hopping foot for my machine.
I know it can be done, other companies have them.
I believe in asking nicely.

They wrote me back a nice letter stating they do not at this time have the foot I want.
They are passing my letter on to the design team.

Bobbin chicken win!
I finished up a border and decided to check my bobbin thread before starting the next.
Glad I did.

Amazon's new box had me giggling like a little girl.
Yes, I ordered another present.
I ordered a telephone.
When the power goes out, the cordless phone doesn't work
and we don't have good cel coverage at home.
So a new $10 phone was ordered.

I thought I'd be finished quilting this beauty
But I'm not.
I still have a few inches of the outer border and all of the green inner border to do.
I truly believe I keep God laughing when I make my plans.

That's OK. I'm going to finish the outer border this morning,
then pack it up and take it to retreat for Show & Tell anyhow.
My fiends don't care if it's finished or not.

Speaking of retreat--
TODAY IS THE DAY!!
Hooray.
